I don't know OpenWRT very well, but do you have any rules or something active that inspect traffic? Seems like something in the SSL handshake is going wrong.

I think I found the issue. Enabling MSS clamping on both the LAN and the VPN interface fixed the issue.

I can access the Kodi repository now.

Does someone here understand why MSS clamping matters for the Kodi repo? I would like to know the technical details. I don't think I can sleep good if I don't know why this was happening Eek

If you want to get to the bottom of it, I would suggest running tcpdump on the mac, the router (or both) and looking at exactly what is failing on the packet level.
