Kodi Not Connecting to LG NAS on NFS
#1
Hello everyone and thanks upfront for the help from your latest noob.

I have Kodi up and running on my Fire Stick 4K Max. I decided to pull out my old LG N1T1DD1 NAS and throw some content on there. Here's where I started running into issues. I was unable to connect to the NAS with Kodi in any way (NFS, SMB).

After playing around with it, I was able to get it to show the NAS in SMB, but I was unable to open the folder. I eventually enabled uPnP in Kodi and am now able to use it via that, but I would like to use it with NFS if possible. After playing around with different settings, I am now able to see the NAS as its IP Address. However, when I click on it I see the share folder but cannot click on it. If I add it anyway it will show the IP address and not the associated folder and no content is displayed.

In the NAS settings for NFS, I have the following:
Permission:  Read/Write
Client host:  All hosts
Root ID mapping: Not use
User ID mapping: Not use
Anonymous ID: Administrator (as apposed to nobody)

I previously had User ID mapping set as Use and that didn't seem to make a difference.

Also, I was finally able to update the firmware to the newest one on the NAS just in case that was an issue.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated! I have done a ton of searching and did find a thread from here:
https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=376249

I may need to use that at some point if I want to get SMB working, but I don't think that is an issue.

What is everyone's opinions on NFS vs DLNA vs SMB? The research I've done suggests NFS is the fastest and least intensive way to stream. I am not opposed to using DLNA as long as all my devices have no issues with it. I was able to get it to stream on an iphone with DLNA Player. Wouldn't connect at first, but it finally established the DLNA connection. SMB wouldn't work with that app or with the Files app. I think it has something to do with the SMB version I have linked here.

Anyway, thanks for reading and let me know if anyone has any suggestions!

A NAS that old probably only use smb v1.

Yeah, I figured that from the other thread I posted so I’m pretty sure I can use that work around for SMB if I go that route. Any ideas on NFS?

Quick Update:

Still not working on FireStick.

Worked on Xbox via Kodi no problem. When I open the IP of the NAS, I see the same share like I do on the fire stick (e.g. /export/Multimedia). When I try to open it on the Xbox, it opens and shows the available folders (e.g. Music, Movies, etc). I am then able to add content to my library. Currently streaming music.

On the FireStick, as stated in original message, I can open the IP and the shared folder appears. However, I am unable to open it. Clicking on it does nothing. So, something in the FireStick is causing issues. Any ideas?

Thanks again,
Jeremy

investigate file/folder permissions on the NAS and the NFS as well

android uses linux based permissions where xbox does not as its windows based, would explain why it only works on xbox

Thanks for the reply. That would make sense. This NAS is old and I am unable to do anything related to SSH. In the configuration, I have NFS set with the settings listed in my original post. Anything stick out there? There is a separate Shared Folder option in the NAS and I have Sharing Permission set to All there.

One of the issues I'm running into here is being able to unify protocol connections for devices. I can't connect to the NAS at all with an iPhone via Files, Connect to Server. I am able to download the DLNA app and connect to it via DLNA. On the Xbox, I can now connect via NFS, but not via SMB (NAS is v1.5, only supports 2/3). On the FireStick, I can connect via DLNA and now SMB after changing config to include v1. I prefer a way in which I can add to library and it appears DLNA is not supported.

Currently:
Xbox - NFS or DLNA (does not support SMB v1.5)
iPhones - DLNA
Windows Laptops - SMB (does not support NFS on Win11 Home)
FireStick - SMB or DLNA

Would there be any issues in using multiple protocols simultaneously? I really only plan on streaming. Any changes should only be done by me.

couldn't say anything about those settings as i don't use your (or any) NAS, you would be using settings provided by the examples https://kodi.wiki/view/NFS which i'm not sure how relate to the GUI settings of your NAS
i expect kodi on firestick is running as UID XXXXX and GID XXXXX which doesn't have permission on the NAS which is causing the issue thus my last reply

i highly doubt it would be an issue as they would be separate daemons on the NAS ... YMMV

Yeah, I read through that and I figure I would need to hack my NAS in order to get SSH access to accomplish a lot of this. I could also look into an alternate firmware option at some point that would allow access.

For now, given my constraints and the fact that Kodi still supports SMB v1 on FireStick, I will just use the setups I have for each device. If that changes (mainly Kodi stops supportinig SMB v1), I will need to look into the options listed above. By the way, do you (or anyone else for that matter) know why Kodi does not support DLNA in terms of adding content to the library? I can get DLNA working on all devices, but it would be nice to have them in the library.

Also, random question, any ideas on how to get iPhones to connect to an SMB or NFS share? I assume it won't support SMB due to it being v1.5, but not sure why NFS won't work.

Anyway, thank you for your help and insight. Much appreciated.
