I am reviewing an Epson EF-21W projector that uses Google TV as its operating system. Kodi installs and works well on it, with one exception. It will not display PGS captions from my ripped Blu Rays on my DLNA server. Kodi isn't even showing an available caption track on any media I've tried, other than my OTA recordings that use EIA-708 text based captions and a couple that have SRT caption files. I have to take that back, I just found one 1080 Blu Ray rip (Star Trek II) that displays the captions. But I tried a couple of others that have the same container, video and audio codecs, but no captions are available.
I have installed Kodi in a number of different Android based devices, including the Nvidia Shield, Onn 4K player, and the Fire TV Cube. They all display image based captions without any issues, and without any specific setting changed by me. I even tried installing a nightly build from Oct 25 to see if anything changed, with no difference. It doesn't matter if the video is H.264 or H.265 (although the projector itself doesn't appear to support H.265 so my server is transcoding the video) or what the container is. I've checked MKV and M2TS, which is pretty much the only containers I use for HD/UHD rips.
Anyone have any suggestions before I make this a demerit in my review of this projector? Any possible setting I've missed? It can't be because they are image based, since VOBSUB captions are available and displayed. And again, I did find one title with PGS captions that worked.
