Android Loosing profile.xml and profile folder configs on power loss
#1
Hi,

I'm aware about the fiolder access changes in Android and so I've setup an external folder for Kodi as described here (Of couse Kodi was turned off).

As long as I do not turn off my Media-Setup (Wifi Switch) everything runs fine. Closing, open Kodi uses my default profile and setups (advancedsettings, guisettings and so on).

After turn on my devices again the things are running weired:
As I opened the profiles.xml via SCP to check it before starting Kodi, it showed 3 kB in Size but was completley empty. So I restored it and then the log showed the second mentioned thing above, my default profile guisettings was missing / empty too.
The only Log error:
2024-12-07 09:50:40.100 T:5532    error <general>: CSettings: unable to load settings from special://profile/guisettings.xml, creating new default settings

Just a guess but for me it looks like Kodi still tries to access its internal folder first before it reads the extrernal configuration file and the changed path (probably a bug?!?).
For information, my device is the latest Google TV Streamer with Android 14.

Does anyone have a clue how to solve this in a comfortabel way and keep my power consumption low?

Thanks for the response izprtxqkft. Not sure how this can help me. Maybe you think I've copied the files within Kodi itself but I used FileManager+ to do it while Kodi was stopped.
This File App offers an easy way to open an SCP (FTP) Connection to any Android device (like TotalCommander with plugin). So no ADB push needed and Backup files (configs only) have been from my old Chromecast.
Because this topic is about weired file loss, not about having them in another location, I did a new thread with reference to the other thread.

Anyway, meanwhile I copied parts of the folder userdata as a Backup folder close to the new Kodi file locations. So I can copy the files over the broken ones (whyever this happens) whenever needed.
Sure this is not perfect, not comfortable and will remove any changes whenever I do one but hey, at least better than copy via PC.

Can you one more time explain what exactly you are doing?

To my understanding, you first exit kodi via the respective kodi GUI menu item. Immediately after that you shut down your device? How exactly. Device‘ GUI menu item? Pull the power plug (hardware switch)?

If step 2 happens very quickly after step 1 it might be the case that kodi is still exiting (which happens in the background while kodi GUI is no longer visible).

If you in this status shutdown the device, kodi might get killed by Android or hit by power loss even in the middle of writing config files for example.

Hi ksooo,
I checked again and with this quick turning of you were right, it seems only to happen in this case as the issue can be repeated with it.
My Media Setup switching is done for many years on fire TVs, Chromecasts and now the Streamer. It has never been a problem since the neccessary changing of config folder location (Streamer was the first device where I had to do it). So I wasn't thinking this could be the cause.

About 2 years or so, I also do some automation via Home Assistant especially if you have guests and you forget about time in the kitchen and didn't turn of TV and all the other stuff, it is nice to have it automated Wink
So the switch is always turned off by Home Assistant and so I will play around with delay and trying to stopp kodi if running before...

Thanks for your help Smile
