Best Kodi Media Player Options 2024
Homatics has received the update to atv14, consequently the automatic frame rate with tvquickactions for apps like disney, prime etc no longer works When asking for collaboration to implement a solution I was banned As far as I'm concerned another company I would stay away from

That's unfortunate. Assume CE is still working?

use of kodi on android is getting more and more challenging

devices are losing AFR like above as of android 14, many devices never had it to start with

now android 15 is having permission issues https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=378191

some can't even manage dolby vision https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=379711

some still exhibit issues when kodi is left idle, however admittedly improved https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=379716

still reports of audio stuttering issues on Shield pop up

inability to access kodi's files across the board without developer level control

some devices removing said developer level control which leaves you with a device you can't manage even though you own

if you use streaming, the device pool is limited but if platforms follow netflix then you won't get any streaming in kodi
netflix still being broken https://github.com/CastagnaIT/plugin.video.netflix

-----

the devices that still seem to work overall are getting quite old by now
Shield 2019 - 5 years old with no signs of a new version, if you got a new version then chances are high something will be broken
Cube Gen3 - 2 years old with no signs of a new version, expect the next version will almost certainly have issues

-----

someone tell me i'm just being bleak here but it looks like a dedicated box is the way to go now, whether it be LE or CE

Don't assume, the CE forums are indicating the Google is forcing locked bootloaders so in the future it is possible only unlicensed boxes with the generic AOSP based Android might be able to boot CE.

the homatics ATV 14 update was released publicly by mistake. it was supposed to be a testing build.

i would not start jumping to any dramatic conclusions about the future state of things based on that build.

It does seem however that Android TV/Google TV is getting more locked down, similar to what Apple has been doing for years. On a related note, it's also frustrating not being able to access the Android data folder for Kodi to move files to/from. I have 3 Fire TV Cubes around the house, and use Xplore to copy my .kodi folder from one to the other two. Saves a lot of time having to set-up Kodi from scratch on each box separately. But on Android TV 10+ boxes, even the adb approach is frustrating, and doesn't work well (at least for me). If anyone has had success w/an Android TV (non phone/tablet) file manager app to access & move files to the .kodi folder inside Android > Data > Kodi, please share.

I think of it is quite the opposite, how many licensed Android devices could ever run CoreELEC and how many of the few that do will ever get major Android updates?   If you read what Google says https://developer.android.com/google/pla...provements on play integrity coming in May.   Do you think the major player will opt out so that the device can run CE?

About two weeks ago after a recent software update I was playing around in the settings of my new Google Streamer, and spotted in the advanced audio section that TrueHD and DTS-HD were listed as enabled. They weren't there when I first bought the GStreamer, so I assume the update finally added them. I quickly tested out some content I had with those audio formats and much like my FireStick 4K, they were all playing fine.

Fast forward to late last week and someone on another forum I'm in was complaining that he couldn't get Kodi to play his TrueHD/DTS-HD files on his Google Streamer. So I jumped back into my device and tried again, and sure enough no audio on either of those formats. FireStick 4K still working fine. Checked the advanced audio settings and both are still showing as enabled. So either I was dreaming that it worked in the first place, or it's somehow been manked since that last update, despite there being no further updates (that I'm aware of).

Or I've stuffed something up in Kodi on my GStreamer that I haven't stuffed on my FireStick 4K. I've checked the System settings and I appear to have all the settings set as the same, TrueHD capable receiver etc. Any other thoughts here as to why the GStreamer would show those lossless formats as supported but not play them?

1. start a new thread in android support https://forum.kodi.tv/forumdisplay.php?fid=164
2. provide a Debug Log

This is not surprising and partially why, back on post 29 of this thread, I indicated that I have chosen to stick with the 2 box approach:  one for online streaming and the second for my local streaming.  The stability and control it provides for my local streaming isn't dependent upon stuff I can't control (ii.e Google antics etc..) and with my Mezzmo solution my Kodi boxes don't need Internet access.  Only Linux and Windows for local clients running Kodi.  Mezzmo clients running the Mezzmo Android app are separate.

My local streaming is totally self-contained, stable and secure.  I realize this may preclude Dolby Vision support but I can live with that.  I think we will see, as you and others have indicated, a further divergence between local and online streaming of content.

Thanks,

Jeff

Agreed.
I am using odroids that work great and no issues with android / Google locking up
For the future, these could be insufficient though. Contemplating a split scenario too, but i'd rather not do that since I would be needing double remotes/systems again .
Let's see what the future brings ..

Yeah, remote controls are an issue to deal with regarding multiple boxes.  Right now my Logitech Harmony remotes are hanging in there but they won't last forever.  I've poked around looking at other solutions but need to get serious at some point.   I bought a Flirc Skip remote when they first came out and played with it a bit when the software was still pretty new.  I'll dust it off soon and make another run at it.  There's at least one more I am eyeing.  The security of a dual box solution is key for me.   No sense opening upon my local streaming environment anymore than I have to, to prying eyes.

Thanks,

Jeff

Give SofaBaton X1S a try... it's the best successor to Harmony.

I plan to.  That's the other one on my list.
