Kodi from Debian - Support Thread
Setting up Trixie is better because it is backed by whole Debian ecosystem: you get newest library updates (though pure security updates might have 1-3 day delays compared to stable), friendly community and estabilished bug tracking process. Flatpak on the other side fetches separate Ubuntu runtime that is very rarely updated as a whole.

I have been using testing since 2019 (when testing was bullseye) and my money is where my mouth is Smile

Wanted to check in and see how the effort was going to get a more recent version of Kodi pushed into Debian Stable.

As a refresher: Kodi on Debian 12 still shows a collection of packages from around the ~v20.1 release time frame. There have been a number of important security and stability updates which greatly improve the end user experience and resolve some crashing behavior over the 20.2, 20.3, and 20.4 release cycles.

I understand Debian is infamous for shipping old and out-of-date software, but it would be great to get the latest point release (20.5) of the major version (v20) that shipped with Debian 12.

If we can't do that because Debian isn't willing to play ball, I'd be supportive of either escalating within Debian via some kind of conflict resolution path. If that doesn't work, the only alternative might just be spinning up a separate repository owned by Kodi (but I'd see that as the least preferred solution).

kodi doesn't own or operate any Debian repository, or a repository for any linux for that matter

Did I understand correctly from the previous page that v 22 alpha is on experimental?

If so, should I expect it to have shown up here?: https://packages.debian.org/experimental/video/

Yes, but it is something that was proposed earlier in this thread as a possibility. If we want to make Kodi as easy as possible to run for as many users as possible, and if working with Debian's FTP team is proving to be too burdensome, this could be a reasonable solution.

I initially advocated against it for all the reasons outlined in one of my earlier responses, but if @basilgello continues to face roadblocks in updating Kodi on the official Debian repos when other packages (productivity packages like LibreOffice, web browsers, etc.) receive updates, we might be better served by spinning up our own Debian package repo (which would come).

In terms of release strategies, we could adopt something pretty simple:
  1. Ship whatever the latest version of Kodi is at that point in time in the Debian official repos each time Debian is ready to cut a new major release. For those who are fine running outdated software, this might be perfectly acceptable. (Note: Debian 12 is now 18 months old, and the version of Kodi shipping in the Debian package repo is even older.)
  2. For users who want more up-to-date releases, they could add Kodi's Debian repo to their sources.list and get point releases and major releases independent of Debian's release cycle.

kodi has dropped it's ubuntu repo in favor of maintaining flatpak for the reason you noted, making it more available to more linux users, but you think they're "just" going to start a debian repo
i doubt it but my opinion doesn't matter here, as a regular user i have no insight to what or why team-kodi does or may do

Kodi crashes on startup after install. Never got it to start.

debian-multimedia repo (dmo) is not an official Debian repository. Official version in Debian sid is now 2:21.2+dfsg-1
Please reach DMO maintainer if you want to keep using DMO builds or delete DMO repo and reinstall kodi and addons from debian sid and reproduce the error so I can help.

I'm having this issue with the omega version of kodi in which when a timestamp is created due to closing a movie (it only happens in movies and not tv shows for some reason) at a midpoint and then returning to the main menu, the timestamp which initially logs the time to resume to correctly, then changes to this number which is always the same: 25620:28:40.

i can only reproduce the problem with one old desktop pc (ga-ma785gm-us2h + phenom II x4 940c) using linux.

This is not "Kodi from Debian" anymore. Now you installed the Kodi Flatpak version. Wink Hence I requested the debug log in the thread you started.
