and, in windows xp, your movies share has what permissions? and which users have access?

for arguments sake, grant everyone access.

for those having problems connecting to win2k and xp shares you might enable some auditing and check the security event log to make sure the account is connecting correctly. also try to map one of the drive$ (c$, d$, etc.) shares using the local administrator account instead of one you created, that will eliminate any incorrectly configured share/ntfs permissions issues.

fyi - connecting great with the new smb config to a w2k3 domain controller via 802.11g wireless adapter. still a little slow but some of that is due to wireless connection.

keep up the great work!

how can us non-developer types contribute to this project? i see the call out for developers however i am a network/system admin and don't do programming. would like to help in any way possible.

thanks!

i think posts like your's help a lot.

maybe more detailed steps on how people can troubleshoot these types of network connections?

step-by-step instructions on how to set the auditing, and then what to look for in the event log.

that would probably help tremendously!

take care,

success

another credentials worked ! (yet xbox/xbox were confirmed to work from another pc)

then , suddently - after resetting the "xbox" 's account password and removing "user must change password on next logon"
it just worked.

all three settings worked :
domain;user:pw@
server;user:pw@
user:pw@

i guess it must have been something with "change pw on next logon"   (?)

--------------
listing a share with 5035 objects in the share root is really, really awfully slow.  (several minutes @ 100mbit full duplex)

changing to a subfolder , then doing the necessary "back" does again stop the gui for several minutes.

- maybe some caching or multithreading is in place?

when change password on next logon is enabled you are required to change the password at that next logon attempt.  clients like the xbox do not have the capability to do this and are prevented from logging on with that account via that client.

to speed up the smb shares disable the "enable id3 tags" checkbox in the my music section of the settings menu.
