Solution to windows 7 and smb shares randomly stopping working

OK, I haven't phrased the title very well, but if you encounter the situation that I did, where accessing a shared drive on a windows 7 machine works fine for months and then inexplicably keeps showing the "lock" username password dialog
after HOURS of research the solution is agonisingly simple..
go to add and remove programs and see if the "Windows Live - sign in assistant" has installed itself - I bet the installation date matches the day when you first started having problems... simply uninstall it and reboot, and viola! Everything works again Smile

I don't take any credit for this by the way.. found it buried on a boxee forum (can't remember the url).. just thought I would share it as it has caused me much frustration in the last few days!

thanks, worked for me. How bloody annoying that something so insignificant can cause so much frustration, would have never guessed that was the cause

Unbelievable. You should be given a medal. I was running crappy UPNP software, and couldnt get subs when SMB stopped working despite my best efforts.

All back to normal. Smile

thanks for posting this here! my shares on the RTM stopped working after a windows update. i made sure the crap windows live components were unchecked, but the live sign in assistant was still installed.

Hello.
It seems windows live assistant causes the problem only if you have upgraded vista to windows 7. Clean installations of windows 7 seems to work after installing windows live assistant.

what a misterious!

Not in my experience. My clean build (64 bit) was affected and I had to uninstall live assistant to get SMB shares working again.

I can't access Windows 7 shares from my xbox, and I don't have sign in assistant in programs add/remove(have Windows Live Essentials and Windows Live Sync).

It's a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 7600.

any one has any clue about a solution?

Thanks in advance.

Didn't work for me.Sad I've resorted to using ccxstream server, bad thing is that I'll have to delete my database files and rescrape the music and movies.

Even with the ccxstream I can't see my shortcut to tv shows unless I goto XBMSB Network Shares.....strange

Edit: Turns out it is case sensitive.

I didn't see the "Windows Live - sign in assistant" before because my windows isn't in English.

But something very odd has happened after uninstall the sign in assistant: now the XBOX can log in but not the ASRock!
Before uninstall XBOX cant access the Win7 computer too. But my main priority is the ASRock Sad

I think there is some option on secpol.msc that will fix this issue. I'm just guessing, but since I update from XP I needed to change the "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level" to make my NAS accessible from any Vista or Win7 computer. This option is "unset" in Windows 7 and set to "NTLMv2" in Vista, but in both OS I need to manual set it to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated" to access the NAS.

Win7 has introduced several new options in secpol, and many default values have changed or unset. Unfortunately, I don't have a Vista computer to compare right now.

Regards.

for those who care:

I thought that the ccxstream was the way to go, but as soon as I rebooted my windows 7 machine, the server switched to an nt server with all the options grayed out. THe xbox could not see any of the drives I setup to share.

BUT...amazingly the smb shares started working!Eek Go figure...The only thing I can think of is that I didn't reboot after I installed/uninstalled the Live assisant

Any thoughts?
