OK, I haven't phrased the title very well, but if you encounter the situation that I did, where accessing a shared drive on a windows 7 machine works fine for months and then inexplicably keeps showing the "lock" username password dialog
after HOURS of research the solution is agonisingly simple..
go to add and remove programs and see if the "Windows Live - sign in assistant" has installed itself - I bet the installation date matches the day when you first started having problems... simply uninstall it and reboot, and viola! Everything works again
