[XBOX] Xbox Softmod advice for XBMC?
#1
ok guys Im after getting another xbox off ebay to give to my parents for xmas as Im constantly nagged about DVD's. So I thaught I'd introduce them to xbmc.

Im not gonna bother with a modchip because I wanna make it as cheap as possible. Im gonna do a softmod for the xbox but I must say Im sorta confused with xboxscene about the best up to date method. Who's the softmod experts here and what advice can you give me in getting this done good and proper first time.

On a side note I have the splinter cell disc and have a usb adapter to plug my pen drive in to with.

Thanks in advance for any advice

I use crayzies mechassault gamesave softmod. Believe there is one for splinter cell as well. Done it on at least 20 boxes with no problems.

Boots straight in to XBMC and its easy to follow.... you will need a copy of splinter cel, mechassult or 007 and an Action Replay or know how to make a USB stick act like one.

I did the hotswap method for a couple of xbox's http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=496263
It's a bit dodgy in that you can damage the xbox's hard disk and/or your pc but its the cheapest way and if you get it right first time it's pretty quick too. Also you don't need any games or action replay cards etc.

I've done about 15 using this. On one or two I had to copy an audio track to get it to unlock but that is about it. Very easy. The first few were a little scary but now it is no big deal. (And it's pretty much free!)

I used Crazie's with the SplinterCell game disc. Instead of the action replay, I modified (spliced) a USB female connector cable to a xbox controller cable, and found an old USB thumbdrive that worked with the xbox file system. I only did it once. Worked great though.

Thanks for all your info guys. I ended up using Krayzie's Ndure installer. XBMC is installed and prepared. Big Grin

If it isn't a 1.6 and you are even just OK with soldering, would TSOP flash the box instead of softmod.. TSOP (unlike softmod) can't be undone if they mess around (turn power off for prolonged periods of time or any other way)...

Ok softmod is going great but there is a problem I've noticed. I never upgraded the hard drive so still using the stock 8 gig but can only use the C:\ and E:\ drives.

When I try opening the F drive from file manager it says the source is unavailable. Do I need to us xbpartitioner to format the F:\ drive?

With a stock 8gb drive, no F partition exists, and there's no extra space available so you can create one: It's already accounted for by the other partitions.

You're just jealous 'cause the voices only talk to me :P

That's weird cos I only have 4 gigs on E:\ and I think C:\ is using about 250 megs. So where does the other 3 gigs go to exactly?

With an 8 GB hard drive after formatting your not gonna get "EXACTLY" 8 GB. But to answer your question, the rest of the space is allocated to partitions X,Y, and Z. These are the "cache" partitions. On the 5 XBOX's I've modded they are around 700 MB or so each. XBMC doesn't show them in the file manager but, if you have Unleash or Evox (dashboards) etc.. It shows up in the file manager. From what I have read, you may want to leave those partitions the way they are because the XBOX uses them.

One of the many good things about XBMC is the various sources that it supports. SMB share could be excellent in your situation for movies because you can store movies on a server or NAT (Network Attached Storage) that has larger hard drive space and it can be used to stream content to the XBOX via SMB. So, your XBOX hard drive can be used for other things. Or if you want more local hard drive space. There are tutorials out there that will help you upgrade your hard drive.....

NOTE: please backup your EEPROM if you have not done so already.

Excellent at least I know where my drive space is being used. The reason I ask all this is I wanted to put a few emulators on their for my son when he's up in my mothers house.

Yea I have smb setup for them for streaming movies and other stuff. Have a hardmod my self so all this softmod craic is new to me. Cheers for the info Wink

You can only flash the TSOP after softmodding or chipping an xbox.

Best thing you can do is install a larger hdd, i have 3x xbox's with 160gig hdd 1 of which is filled with kids movies so my daughter can flick thru them and watch what she wants without needing the pc on for streaming.Or our adult movies get streamed. Also loaded some xbox games and have Coinops mame with 1066 arcade games .
