Synology NAS with Kodi Installation
#1
Hi! I'm new to Kodi and very novice when it comes to the network part of computers.

I'm using an old Synology NAS and a Nvidia Shield. I used the setup explained in this wiki: https://kodi.wiki/view/NFS#NFS_sharing_f...gy_or_QNAP

I got Kodi to work. However, now my NAS is complaining about security issues. It says I opened up the SSH on port 22 and also that I used a "*" (joker) in the NFS settings for the VIDEO folder on my NAS.

So I wonder if I could install Kodi without making my network more vulnerable and how to?

Thanks!

How old is "old" regarding your NAS? Because Synology is quite active in updating its DSM firmwares.

A NAS complaining about security issues... Kodi itself does not use port 22 when you use NFS as the file protocol for video sources. Why would you use an '*' in NFS settings for the video folder?

A vulnerable network is a problem when ports to the evil internet are opened via your router. Ports or connections to your local network are not a problem.

You don't need ssh for nfs access or to use Kodi.  Just turn it off.

This is my setup.  Note that only users on my LAN subnet have access.  Change to your subnet.  I have ran this way for years with no issues.

I can also confirm that Synology NAS works fine and secure with Kodi.

My set-up is much the same as above, except I don't have "Allow connections from non-privileged ports" ticked as in my case it's not needed. I'd suggest you to also remove the setting if you don't need it, but aside from that it works fine.

You can also be more specific on exactly which hosts/IP addresses can access the NFS share, for even further locking down (you can set multiple profiles in the NFS permissions tab in DSM).

I guess it would help to know what DSM is running on the Synology.  Maybe it's very old and you need to SSH into the NAS to set things up?

I have an old DS209, you don't need SSH to set things up for 'normal' use with Kodi.
