DTS and Dolby Digital with KÖNIG AV cable for Xbox?

raas Wrote:The flaw in the switch you mention, is it easy to change?
I do not know, I have not tried (since I use component out), but it is a known hardware design flaw that is only in this specific cable.

raas Wrote:Is the xbox actually capable of doing the following things at the same time:

-svhs
-composite
-analog audio through the L/R rca
-digital output through the optical
Not that cable, no (like I said, optical on it only works in component mode on that cable). Otherwise, yes the Xbox could probably output stereo to both analog RCA and then digital optical at the same time, but it can not output stereo analog RCA at the same time as outputting DD/DTS surround to the digital optical.

Hi,

Thanks for moving the post, I found that post later on.

Well, If I have the time this week, I'm going to open up the box, and see what it switches..

keep you informed.

Hi,

well, did some research..(build my own break-out box for the xbox with al connections) and I know whats wrong.

by following the chart provided on this page. http://www.gamesx.com/avpinouts/xbox.htm
pin 6-18 have to be connected in order to pass-through dolby digital 5.1 / DTS. (this info is from other resourses on xbox-scene.. the pinout only provides details for the video signal)

checking the konig cable.. that is not the case, in composit/svhs mode (switch on cable) only pin 5-17 is connected.
the digital audio signal which is on the digital output is 'just' always there, only it is nog pass-through of dd/dts.

if the cable is in component mode pin 6-18 and 7-19 are connected providing hdtv component output.. (and while 6-18 are connected, dd/dts is directly passed through)

with my own breakout box I discovered that in digital dd/dts mode the xbox is still capable of putting out an analog audio signal to L/R if the source is 2 channel stereo (like music). If the source is digital dd/dts than de analog L/R is muted and the data is only passed-through directly over the digital output.

If one would open up the xbox and connect pin 6 and 18. then this konig cable would also be able to output digital audio in combination with svsh/composite which is what this all started.

Or, as I did, open up the original xbox connector and solder the connections you want... it isn't that hard to solder.
(i now have, 3x analog L/R, 2x Svideo, 2x composite, 2x spidf (rca plug), and a female scart connector where RGB-scart is available (by grounding 5-17, 6-18 and 7-19)

I hope this info might be usefull for anyone.

cheers !

Hi,

With much interest I read the thread since I have a Konig digital av cable but are unable to output Component video with just RCA stereo sound. I checked the pin settings of the xbox as referred to in the link, but cannot figure out what pins I have to connect to get Component video out with RCA analog audio.
Should I put the konig cable into the analog video - mode (enabling RCA stereo out) and then solder 5-17, 6-18 and 7-19 ?

Who can help me with this?

thanks, Michiel

Old thread, but thanks raas, great info!

Just bought the König cable without doing any research, just took for granted it would do DD/DTS throught the optical spdif together with s-video.

An easy mod of the cable could be to strip a small part of the cable before the switch and connect wires for pin 6-18.

Would anyone happen to know the colors of these wires?

Cheers!

Sorry to dig up such an old post but after buying 2 of these (pretty poor) cables thinking that they were faulty I decided to do some research and stumbled upon this post.
I can indeed confirm that when in composite/s-video mode pins 6 and 18 are NOT connected. However, when in component mode pins 18, 19 and 5 are connected which gives hd/digital audio.

If anyone is still interested you'll have to hack apart the plug which is sealed in thick plastic and then is encased in thick metal RF shielding. Remove the silver piece and the middle of the connector will slide back.
Count along the pins on the bottom row until you get to number 18.
Again refer to this diagram for the pinouts http://www.gamesx.com/avpinouts/xbox.htm
You'll see that 18 and 19 are soldered together (badly) with a black wire under some glue. Remove the glue and unsolder pin 19 but keep 18 connected.
Cut the black wire as far up as you can, strip it and tin it.
Flip the plug over and count along to pin 6, there is nothing currently on it and solder the black wire on.
This of course will make the component connectors useless (I'd imagine, don't have anything to test them with) but will give you glorious Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS on your crappy old CRT TV. Smile

Another way is to open the Xbox and just add a wire between the pin 18 and ground, instead of pin 6.
Since pin 6 also is ground, it easier to solder one of the cable ends to a ground point.

See link for a pin layout.

and follow point 6.

Or you could do thatSmile does mean taking the motherboard out though which is a bit of a pain.
