Every few videos I watch, I get the dreaded "opensubtitles username or password empty or invalid" even though neither issue is correct.

Subtitles work on most videos, but occasionally I get this message.  I can re-enter the credentials, but it doesn't help (which is not surprising, given that they were correct to start with).

Issue seems to happen more with videos that are mostly in a foreign language.

Please help.

As for your problem, please provide a Debug Log that captures the problem.
