#31
tested with the same movies.
the result is that the DTS-HD is displayed in the Denon, but the sound is totally chopped up, with TrueHD stereo is displayed but nothing can be heard...

Thanks - I see the issue. Funny:
Look:

2024-09-28 16:09:06.293 T:11423    info <general>: Duration ms 10 Gone 10 ms Delay 0 RAW Head-Position 7680
2024-09-28 16:09:06.295 T:11423    info <general>: Duration ms 20 Gone 20 ms Delay 0 RAW Head-Position 7680
2024-09-28 16:09:06.296 T:11423    info <general>: Duration ms 30 Gone 30 ms Delay 0 RAW Head-Position 7680
2024-09-28 16:09:06.297 T:11423    info <general>: Duration ms 40 Gone 40 ms Delay 0 RAW Head-Position 7680

It starts with 7680 (!) which is: 40 ms already - that's not good, but okay - the real problem happens here:

2024-09-28 16:09:06.589 T:11423    info <general>: Duration ms 360.00000000000017 Gone 201.52083333333334 ms Delay 158.4791666666668 RAW Head-Position 38692
...
2024-09-28 16:09:07.036 T:11423    info <general>: Duration ms 370.00000000000017 Gone 370.00000000000017 ms Delay 0 RAW Head-Position 124400

We try to add 10 ms of playing audio at 6.589 but this needs 7.036 - 6.589 ~ 440 ms time. Means - all the buffer is fundamentally underrunning ... from 158 ms filled to minus 300 ms.
So you should hear constant audio outs ... during playback for DTS-HD.

Same for TrueHD.

Yeah - that I cannot fix ... if it is not able to accept data within 440 ms we will die ;-)

Do you have by chance an adb logcat while playing DTS-HD?
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Unfortunately not, the device does not have a USB data port, only the USB-C for its own power supply

I would hope adb over wifi or with a USB-C hub would work, that is pretty common.

I'll get smart and test adb over wifi...

I just saw a Dutch review of this device from a fairly renowned tech web site (tweakers.net) on YouTube.

The reviewer stated that indeed hi-res audio such as DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD cannot be bitstreamed, but can be converted to PCM.

Hi, that's me. I was describing what happens when you use a player that decodes internally, like Kodi, VLC or Nova.

From the results we already see that the HW could in theory do it properly, as it opens nicely, so I think it's a firmware shortcoming - most likely cause they don't plan to sell such content ... it's a pitty - but yeah - from a "economic" POV kodi is driving their financial use-cases just nuts ...

The big downside of decoding to PCM is that you lose all height/object information from TrueHD Atmos and DTS:X streams. So for people with multi-speaker / height speaker setups it's not the best choice.

I decided to keep this and use it where I don't need surround sound with the faint hope that they might fix it in a future firmware update.

On another audio subject, I don't understand when Dolby MAT is useful.  It causes Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital+ to be decoded to multi-channel PCM before it is sent to my AVR.  This device like the Fire Cube does not allow Dolby MAT to be disabled.

It allows for audio mixing (UI beeps or whatever).
