Transform sound format on the fly?
#1
Hi,

my Samsung TV can't play the sound of my Stones video when I stream the video from my Windows 11 PC to the TV. So I installed Kodi because I thought that Kodi, as a DLNA server, can also transform the sound. In the audio settings, you can select various settings under "Output Device", but my TV says "Cannot play sound" regardless of the setting I select. I guess I was a bit naive to think that Kodi could transform the sound on the fly, wasn't I?

Thanks for a tip,
Stefano

What formats can your TV accept?
No, Kodi does not transcode audio or video streams.

When I hover over this MKV file, Kodi says it's DTS format. Other MKV video files use Dolby as sound format, which is no problem for my TV.

Ok, so I think the solution will be to transcode the whole video to MP4 or something similar.

Thanks for the clarification

You might want to look at the Kodi sharing solutions.  May of them support DLNA serving of media, can do on-the-fly transcoding, pretranscoding of media, run on Windows and even have a Samsung native app for your TV.  I run Mezzmo and it is easily capable of this, as are some of the others.

Thanks,

Jeff

You need to set Number of channels to 2.0, then enable Passthrough, then enable Dolby Digital and Enable Dolby Digital Transcoding, and finally disable all the other formats listed like DTS.

However this will only work if the device running Kodi is connected via HDMI or SPDIF directly to the TV.

Hi,

meanwhile I checked Mezzmo. And yes indeed, it has options to pretranscode and even trancode on the fly. Let's see how stable this is. In any case I can hear Keith Richards on my TV for the first time!

Thanks for input,

I author the Mezzmo Kodi addon, in case you end up using it and have any questions.  With your Samsung TV and Mezzmo you can either use the native Samsung media browser or the Mezzmo Android app for Samsung.  Other clients may use Kodi.  I have a mix of various clients.  Also with Mezzmo you can pretranscode in advance vs. on first playback.  After it has been transcoded it will replay the transcoded file going forward.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I've been looking into Mezzmo a bit more closely. There are a few problems, probably because I'm doing something wrong.

1. I can't populate the “Movies” list in the interface. Only the “Genre” list has managed to link the movies on my hard drive. When I right-click on “Movies” and on “Properties”, I have no option to set the path to my video directory or to tell this “library” where to find the movies.
2. After I managed to stream a movie with sound on the fly to the TV, I'm not able to repeat it without prior transcoding. The MKV movies start, but nothing can be heard. When I right-click on the movie icons, I can't find an option like “play with on-the-fly transcoding.” I also can't find a corresponding option in the general settings. How did I manage it the first time?
3. The result is that I have to pre-transcode each movie. To do this, I have to click on each individual movie and start the transcoding with about 10 mouse clicks per movie. There doesn't seem to be a dialog that sets my playback device (“Samsung (no DTS)”) as the default output device and the “formats” for transcoding as the default format. After setting up the transcoding, there are a total of three dialogs per movie that need to be dismissed, one of which I don't understand (something along the lines of: “The object only needs to be partially transcoded – are you sure?” What are you supposed to answer?).
4. When I initiate streaming to the TV in Mezzmo (i.e. not accessing Mezzmo from the TV via DNLA), the program reports that the media server has not been started. Only after restarting Mezzmo several times it recognizes the running media server (I don't run it as a service, I start it within the program).
5. When I access Mezzmo via a browser and select a movie, the display quality is completely unusable. The help page says “Go to the Details page for the video and click the MAXIMUM VIDEO SIZE”. I can't find a “Details Page” or an entry called “Maximum Video Size” anywhere. Note: There is a “Video” tab in the movie object properties, with a “File Properties” button. But clicking on it doesn't do anything.
6. Cover art is not found for popular movies either.

Do you have the time and inclination to help here? :-)

Thanks and regards
