Curious about Kodi and Dolby Atmos
#1
I am still learning the details of dolby atmos vs Dolby TrueHD 7.1 Atmos, so my question might be terribly confused. I had some questions that I was hoping i could find help with here. I have a new Atmos setup, receiver and speakers. But I am curious what Kodi supports and what I should see as a streaming format on the receiver. I think equipment is indifferent, but it is a Sony receiver that supports Atmos. What makes me curious is from the Apple TV with Atmos movies, the receiver will show Dolby Atmos as signal as expected. From Kodi all I ever get is a 7.1 PCM signal. I am streaming Blu Ray Rips from DVDFab, i can tell that all that are on these blu rays are TrueHD 7.1. Are blu rays capable of having Dolby Atmos and not Dolby TrueHD?

There's a whole thing here about atmos being object based vs truehd being 7.1pcm based, idk, not sure i get it.

But the two are clearly not the same, it seems the object based Dolby Atmos would be superior based on particular speaker position?

You haven't told us what you're running Kodi on as that's also important.

To enable the best assistance for your issue, we request that you provide a full debug log.

The instructions to do this are on this link to our wiki - debug log (wiki)

If you are using the Basic Method, then ensure the following is applied...
1.Enable debugging in Settings>System Settings>Logging,
2.Restart Kodi
3.Replicate the problem.
4.Upload the log to Kodi Paste Site manually or use the Kodi Logfile Uploader. (wiki) With either method post the link to the log back here.

If you are using the Advanced Method ensure you have correctly created and applied the advancedsettings.xml file (wiki)

In both instances, you should see the word DEBUG throughout the log.

Please upload full logs only - no partial or redacted logs.
Do NOT post your logs directly into the forum. Use the kodi paste site. Post the link to your pasted log in the relevant forum thread for your issue.

Note - This is an automated message as the poster, who is either one of our moderators or administrators, doesn't always have time to leave a personal message.

First to know is that Dolby Atmos is not a standalone codec, it is an extension of other Dolby codecs, these are Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD. So when you see Dolby Atmos on a streaming service then that is usually Dolby Digital Plus with an Atmos extension, however when you see Dolby Atmos on the cover of a Blu-Ray or UHD disc then that is more likely to be the higher bandwidth Dolby TrueHD with an Atmos extension. So the Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD normally accounts for the 5.1/7.1 channels and Atmos provides and height channels, so the .2 or .4 in 7.1.2/7.1.4 channels.

So if you see LPCM 7.1 from a Dolby Atmos source, then what is likely happen is the TrueHD 7.1.4 is being decoded to LPCM 7.1 and in this situation the .4 height channels are discarded.

And Atmos track on BluRay disc's usually has way higher bitrate, than "streaming Atmos" which typically is only 768 kb/s.

Great info. running on windows, that clearly should have been mentioned. Windows speaker configuration does let me choose Atmos, so i believe it is supported.
