So I tried to remote control my iPad and XBMC. With the remote app running on my iPhone. It worked!!!

But if I attach a video-audio cable to the iPad to the TV it does not work any more. Looks like I might need to have the original server- client app- remote app all In the same network to make it work.

Any advise if this is true?

The remote app uses a network connection (by IP address), so I'm not sure how the audio/video cable you mention is relevant here.
