firstly the pal 16:9 setting results in a black screen when rebooted
secondly i cant find animorphic
i have divx movies from dvd in 16:9..but they appear streched vertically in the basic original settings ...in xbmp there was the 16:9 setting and animorphic which resulted in black bars at top and bottom...but the aspect radio is perfect!
where do these settings appear in xbmc? are they working yet?

a few points:
selecting pal 16:9 and rebooting should not cause it to not boot - all it does is alter the widescreen flag in the screen resolution. this is obviously a bug, though i cannot reproduce it - are you using the latest cvs?
xbmp's aspect ratio code is nowhere near perfect - i can guarantee you that it won't be perfect unless you have adjusted the aspect ratio correction setting in order to make it so.
xbmc, on the other hand, does have perfect aspect ratio display. the problem is that your avi does not have square pixels. the avi file format does not have any aspect ratio flags, so all we can do is assume that they are square. this is what every avi player does. there actual pixel ratio might be 4:3, but it really depends on how you ripped it. if you ripped it straight from dvd without any scaling whatsoever (ie 720x576 for a pal dvd), then the pixels actually have a ratio of 512/381. alternatively, if you ripped to 1/1 anamorphic pixels, then they'd have a ratio of 4/3.
an option to allow you to specify the actual pixel ratio of the source may be added in the future, assuming demand is there. (note that i personally rip my dvd's by just removing the anamorphic nature - they are thus not square, rather have a ratio of 128/117 which is identical to the pixel ratio of a pal tv - this optimizes video quality on a 4:3 set, so demand is there at the moment.)
note that if xbmc can determine the pixel ratio from the file (such as with mpeg1 and mpeg2 files) it does so, and scales the image correctly. mkv has support for the aspect ratio flag, although i'm not sure about playback compatibility with xbmc at the moment.

i tried the widescreen setting in the msdash and now it actually boots...however the avi im trying is still strectched to the top of the screen....
its a 720x576 divx avi with mp3 audio
when i try mpegs/vcd/svcd ..the aspect raio chages to have the black bars on top and underneath....but the divx avi will not do that..even with best resolution setting off
im xbmp i had zoom and stretch off and animorphic on which put the bars on top and underneath ...this makes the picture look best..with 720x576 16:9 pal settings on
wondering if this will be fixed later on as i cant get animorphic to work
