This might be a really lame question, but every time I try to launch a regular .exe I am greeted with the emulator option screen, is there no way to just launch a windows executable in retroplayer on a pc?

No, there is no way to launch a regular .exe from Kodi. How would the user control Kodi once Kodi is in the background?

I don't know about getting it to work with RetroPlayer, but you can make Kodi launch .exe files just fine by telling it that a .bat file with the instructions necessary to run .exe files is an external player. Like every other external player, Kodi will retake control once the .exe/.bat combo is closed.
