I have some movies in a directory, they are movies for grown up people.
And I also have some movies for my children, in a separate folder on the NAS.
I'd like to have two different sections of the GUI with my movies and my children's movies listed.
I'm still using Confluence skin since I'm used to it and right now I have the TV shows section and the Movies section. I'd like to add a new section named Child movies, but I'm open to a completely different setup if it's simpler, for example using playlists.

You can do that with either smart playlists or video nodes (both in the wiki and lots of threads here).
The process is:

For smart playlists:

• Make a smart playlist that points at your films
  
• Make another smart playlist that points at kids films
  

Now you have a choice.
Hard way:
Edit confluence skin xml files - get rid of movies, add a home menu item pointing at your films playlist, and another at the kids films playlist.
This would need to be repeated every time confluence is updated - you could make your own version of confluence with a different name, which would need to be updated at least every time you change kodi version.
Easy way:
Use a confluence mod (in the skins section), set custom home items in the gui as above

The process is similar for video nodes.
