Solved Unknown Sources message when installing from zip
#1
I started to install, but then got a warning that it would access "personal information" on my computer. It shouldn't need to do that, should it?

 it shouldn't and it doesn't.
sorry, can't help without a Debug Log.

Do you mean it doesn't present you with a notification that that's what it will do and tell you you're accepting liabilty, because that's exactly what it did. I'm telling you that's what happened, and I escaped out at that stage.

Its unexpected behoviour @bilgepump, and it didn't happen for me when testing this. Can you turn on debugging and try again. If it does the same thing the escape out again, but post the log link pehaps that will show something

That is a standard Kodi message when you enable 'Unknown Sources" to allow installing add-ons by zip.

Standard warning when enabling unknown sources to take care what you install, as if you install anything from outside the Official repo the addon could potentially do anything to your system.

that's not what it says..... Anyway, the bottom line is that I won't install anything that tells me it's intending to mess with anything it's got no business messing with, so I can't test the new scrapers. Sorry.

It is nothing to do with what the scrapers do, it's a blanket warning only when you enable the unknown sources setting. It is saying that once you enable that settings to allow addons from outside the Official repo to be installed then beware what you install, as anything from a non-official source could pose a security risk such as accessing personal data. As longer as you install stuff from trusted sources then you'll be ok, it's only if you go off and install random stuff or the piracy type addons you open yourself up to vulnerabilities.

The scrapers will do nothing other than scan the media files you point them at, they will NOT access anything else on your system or network.

Again, the warning says specifically that addons will be given access, there's no "could" about it. I won't agree to that, regardless as to whether somebody else tells me it's not really true in any specific case.

@bilgepump you are sounding upset, and please don't be. In some sense it is good that the dialog box did frighten you off, generally that is the intention of that message. It is there to alert users to take care when installing things that are not from the official repo, because in general use that is a route that is taken to install priacy addons. we don't want users doing it by accident. Unfortunately it blanket covers installing any addon from zip file, including test versions of scraper addons created by the team.

If you don't want to do it even following an explanation then of course that is up to you.

If you don’t trust what I tell you then I guess there’s little point in me replying to any of your future posts.

I was just reporting back why I wasn't going to test, that's all, I'm not upset.....
IF something untoward were to happen, any recourse I would have is governed by the warning and acceptance. Oh, "some guys on the internet told me otherwise" does not come into it, no "oh it doesn't really mean that" varies the "agreement". It means exactly what it says....

I'm genuinely curious as to what 'recourse' some people think they're entitled to from use of a piece of free software.
You have to admire the optimism.

Well that's fine then all round. Music Support is generally a happy and friendly corner of the Kodi forum, I just want to keep it that way.
