Anybody got a LG Magic Remote working via CEC ?
#1
Hi all,

New user here.  I've been using Kodi for a few years without too much problems.  But now I've bought a new LG TV, with a magic remote.  With this remote, the CEC function (where you can control Kodi with your TV's remote) doesn't seem to work.  It always worked on my 15 year old Sony TV.

I've googled around a bit, and it seems a lot of users experienced the same problem, but nobody has a real answer.  Since it's been a few years since the last posts in these threads, I figure I'd ask again.

I've already enabled SimpLink (this is LG's name for HDMI CEC) in the menus.

I already tried the following suggestions I found online :
- Tried the Raspberry Pi + HDMI cable on a different TV : tried that on my old Sony -> works.
- Unplug the TV completely, then restarted -> didn't work.
- Unplug HDMI cable, replug, choose connections option, choose "other device" -> didn't work

I have a Flirc, but I really don't want to go that route.

Some other thing that might be important : every time I connect the Raspberry Pi/Kodi into the TV, the TV detects it as "Roku/ADB"

I know I can also use the Kore app to control Kodi.  I actually do and it is indeed great.  But there's also something to be said to be able to control it all via one remote instead of having to use a separate app.

I really hope somebody will have a solution for me, but I fear the real problem lies with LG.

Cheers!

I have a 2012 LG TV with a magic remote, and I tested/tried it a long time ago. IIRC only the buttons will work, not the magic mouse part. I'd have to test again what the current status is.

Hi,

Thanks for your response.
But to be clear, I don't really want the magic remote to work as a mouse cursor like it can do on LG TV's. I would be more than happy if the navigation buttons and the back button would work.

Nobody else?  Surely I can't be the only one with a modern LG TV who wants to get this CEC thing to work with Kodi ? Angel

I just connected a RPi4B with LibreELEC 9.2.3 (not out yet), and all CEC seems to work on the 2012 LG TV here. Including its Magic remote as far as most of the buttons goes.

Maybe... the newer LG TVs are working a little bit diferent?

No idea.  Thanks for trying though!  Here's hoping that somebody else with a more recent LG model will also read this thread and be willing to try this out.

There's a strange development with this problem. Just this week I tried this again, after not having used my Kodi box for a few weeks, and the LG's remote just worked with CEC! Go figure! No idea what happend, bit I guess my LG tv got an update of some sort.
Sorry I can't exactly tell what made the difference, but I'm sure happy it works now! Smile

Hi,

I'm having the exact same issue as described in this thread. You still don't have an idea of what it took to fix it?

Hi,

No, sorry.  All of a sudden it automagically started working.  I did enable CEC in de the menu structure of my TV, but at first that didn't make any difference.  Then, some days later it worked.  Go figure...

Cheers,
Bart

Found this on another page, "not expecting much i ordered a MicroHDmi-HDMI cable off of amazon (amazon basics cable, just search for it). TV recognized rpi as Rouko just as before with no HDMI-CEC . Frustrated i resetted the HDMI port in TV from Rouko set top box to just HDMI (no device) and to my surprise all of a sudden the TV remote worked! I have now full control over LE via LG Magic Remote  (interestingly Kodi also identified my Soundbar connected via HDMI Arc)

so you might want to try out a direct cable connection (i used the official Micro HDmi adapter before)." Hope it helps

The auto-location of the CEC connection in the RPi may have a problem sometimes. Try fixating the HDMI port number in Kodi's Input Devices setting and/or try a different port on your TV.

Just got my brand new LG TV working with Kodi. Navigate to Device Settings, then Universal Remote Control settings. Set it up as a Roku, go through all the prompts. When you get to the screen that has you test the menu button, keep testing until skip appears. After that, it worked flawlessly for me.

Thanks for the tip. I was trying to do the same thing and your method worked, but it's definitely not flawless.
"long press" still doesn't work. I've tried everything I can think of & can't get it to work properly. If anyone's managed it, I'd really appreciate hearing how you did it.

This is doubly frustrating because my last TV was a 2018 LG OLED, the equivalent model, and I was able to drive Kodi perfectly, including long press.
You can see the simplink setup is essentially the same on the 2022 model TV as it was on the 2018 one, but in their attempts to make it easier to use, they've actually made it less functional *sigh*.
Piss poor really. Supposed to be a market leading TV with a "Magic" remote, bit it's a total pain to set up, and doesn't really drive any other devices especially well.

For the record, I have a Sony UBPX-700 as well as the Shield connected to the TV via Pioneer VSX1171 Reciever. I could use the 2018 TV's remote to drive everything. Some of the BluRay functions only worled via the Simplink menu which was not ideal but I could live with it, as it worked with Kodi properly. Now with the 2022 version Kodi doesn't entirely work properly, and I can't make the Blu-Ray work properly either, since they changed the Simplink menu functions.

Come on LG, sort it out! Enough of tour obsession with adverts we can't opt out of, enforced power mamagement, and annoying pixel refresher nag screems we can't turn off.... How about making yoir newer TV's work as well as the older ones did!
