Solved Kodi 19.3 resume of HEVC files do not show video
#1
Hi,
since my latest update of the AMD Radon software 21.12.1 the self encoded HEVC files cannot be resumed in Kodi 19.3. I only hear the sound but not video is shown. Screen is blank.

I used Handbrak and XMedia Recoder to encode x264 file to x265 files.
The files are encoded by using the AMD hardware acceleration.

Before that update Kodi can extract thumbnails and resume this files.

Container format of the files is always mkv.
I tried to use mp4 instead. But that does not change anything.
I tried to use software encoder what is significantly slower but the result is the same.

I tried to figure out what are the differences between the old files and the new ones.

Mediainfo shows for the old file:

Standard                                 : Component

For the new files the "Standard" is missing and instead the files contain:
colour_primaries_Source                  : Stream
Transfer characteristics                 : BT.709
transfer_characteristics_Source          : Stream
Matrix coefficients                      : BT.709
matrix_coefficients_Source               : Stream

I looked into kodi.log to see if their is any error messages. But the playback of an old an new format file look the same.
No warnings or error messages.

My system:
OS: Libreelec 10.0.1
Kodi: 19.3 Build 2021-11-30

Maybe someone has an idea what is going on?

For starters, it is HEVC, not HVEC. Secondly, there is no reason for only HEVC files not to resume in Kodi. It's just another video file. How about a proper Kodi debug log (wiki) so we can see what goes on underwater.

You can, in LibreELEC, also connect via SSH, and type in pastekodi, which should give you a URL in return. Paste that URL here and we'll have a look.

Hi,
thank you for the quick response.

Here is the pastekodi URL
http://ix.io/3JE4

I started playing the file and script 10 minutes in the file and stopped playing.
Then I started playing again by resuming from that position.

Thank you for your help.

Ffmpeg isn't quite happy with all these video errors.
I also know that Emby can cause some havoc in Kodi.

2021-12-27 11:20:20.287 T:846 DEBUG <general>: DoWork - Saving file state for video item smb://...

No further details/problems here as far as I can tell...

It could be a straight up bug that was introduced in the new AMD drivers. Are there any other mentions of this via Google?

Hi,
I tried to find something but the only things about the ffmpeg errors are related to tickets a few years ago.
But from what I see the bugs should be in the version that is used in Kodi.
From what I am understanding the problems creating the thumbs and the resume error are related to the ffmpeg errors.
So either their is a new bug in ffmpeg or the AMD encoder is doing something wrong what the ffmpeg does not like.

Next I will try to create a ticket for ffmpeg to see if they have an idea what is going on.

Thank you for the help.

After days of research I finally found a solution for the problem.

The AMD VCE driver is damaged since 21.5.x.
In the AMD community is a post that since 21.5. also other people have problems with GPU encoding
https://community.amd.com/t5/drivers-sof...m-p/482980

So I downloaded the 21.4.1 driver, wiped the 21.10.2 driver with the AMD cleanup utility and installed the driver from April 2021.

And now the hardware encoding with Handbrake and FFmpeg is creating HEVC files that Kodi likes. Thumbnail creation and resume is working as expected.

But Windows will try to update this old drivers with the Windows update.
You need to disable this.
See https://www.tomshardware.com/news/how-to...es-windows
Attention: This can open up security problems. So make sure you know what you are doing.

Their is already an 21.12.1 driver available. But I did not try it.
As long as 21.4.1 is working for me I will not update.

Hope this helps other people who run into the same problem.

Good that you found the problem source. Video drivers (or any drivers basically) can mess up the user experience quite a bit. I create a full disk image of the system partitions of my PC from time to time. Just in case something goes totally apesh!t, restoring that disk image saves you so much time.

FYI, I also do regular HEVC conversions, but I'm using an outdated Ubuntu Linux 16.04 LTS pc (16.04 has some extended warranty) and use batch files for ffmpeg to directly convert videos using a Nvidia GTX950 graphics card. Not sure if I do things 100% correct, but it works for me. File savings go from 40-90%, so that helps.
