Hello @
madmat276 ,
Welcome to Kodi forum.
What exactly do you mean by Kodi support HDR10+? By this I mean what exactly are your expectations? What do you want to see Kodi do in regards to HDR10+ which it is not doing currently? What platform and what device are you using? Where are your movies playing from, sitting somewhere on your harddisks or streaming from the internet? All these are important when you talk about HDR. If you elaborate what you mean by "support" someone might understand you better.
This is what I know in regards to Kodi 19.4 and HDR10+
What Kodi can do:- If your Setup is HDR/HDR10+/DV capable.
It can play HDR, HLG and HDR10+/DV no problem. It will passthrough the movie to the monitor/TV for processing or process the movie on hardware level (Shield TV) and send the final product to TV. The TV should detect the incoming video as HDR/HDR10+.
- If your Setup is not HDR/HDR10+/DV capable.
It will convert (tonemap) HDR, HLG and HDR10+ to SDR on a software level. The TV receives SDR even if the source is HDR therefore HDR movies don't look washed out on non HDR monitor.
Any device capable of playing 4K SDR, should play 4K HDR as well and the movies will just be OK. The movies must be on your hardisk, a shared folder or NAS. Not streaming from the internet.
What Kodi can't do:
It will not play DV movies if your device has no DV support. No tonemapping of DV to SDR.
Kodi 20 Alpha is capable of playing DV movies (mostly mp4) on devices with no DV support by decoding the movie on a software level but not Kodi 19. The playback is not very smooth yet as per the time of this writing.
Let me elaborate using my settup.
1. Windows 10/11 PC- Kodi 19.4 (.exe version)
- 4K at 30Hz
- no HDR/HLG/HDR10+/DV
- no HDR on OS level
- no HDR passthrough in Kodi settings
- HDMI v 1.4
- connected to TV via HDMI. PC cannot detect my TV is HDR capable
- Kodi tonemaps HDR and HLG movies, sending SDR to TV
- DV movies have a weird colour. On Kodi 20 Alpha the colours are better but still not good
- movies on external HDDs connected via USB hub
2. Android 11 TV- Kodi 19.4 (Android version)
- 4k at 60Hz
- HDR/HLG/HDR10+
- no DV
- HDMI In v 2.0
- Kodi plays and sends HDR/HLG/HDR10+ to TV without tonemapping. TV shows respective logo whenever Kodi plays, meaning the TV is processing the signal.
- DV movies have a weird colour. On Kodi 20 Alpha the colours are better but still not good
- Movies are connected via SMB shared from the PC.
This means Kodi 19 supports HDR10+ fully and DV on devices that support it if the movies are not streamed over the internet. Internet streaming in Kodi is a wormhole and things don't always work as many users expect.
For now Estuary skin does not differentiate HDR. There could be other skins that can do this with proper file naming. They can show if a movie is HDR, HDR10+, HLG or DV
