Linux Trying to play a DVD .ISO file instantly crashes Kodi
#1
Rainbow
I recently installed Kodi and really like it so far. My first job is to get all my movies organized and into the Library. I'm using method 1 and making a folder for each movie file inside the source directory.

I have several .ISO files that I ripped from DVDs that I own. I put the ISO inside the folder, but when I try to play the DVD/ISO, Kodi insta-crashes.

Everything is default - no addons or skins - until I am more familiar with Kodi.

Linux distribution: Debian 11 Bullseye

OS info:
$ uname --all
Linux debiserv 5.10.0-19-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.10.149-2 (2022-10-21) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Kodi version: 19.4 Debian package version: 2:19.4+dfsg2-2~bpo11+1
CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-2300 CPU @ 2.80GHz, 4 cores available
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
Install method: Was a while ago. I'm pretty sure I got Kodi from the Debian Backports repository

How to reproduce: Start Kodi. Find movie in library that is a DVD .ISO file. Click play. Crash.
Backtrace: I will do this if it will help.
Compiler output: N/A

Full crash log here.

I don't really know but the log looks pretty normal. It ends at "INFO: Creating demuxer" and that is when it crashes.

I'd just as soon rip the ISOs to MKV files, but I wanted to preserve the DVD extras and I'm not sure how Kodi handles those. Any help is appreciated.

Can Kodi actually play from an ISO directly or does it need to be extracted first?

Yes, it can and must play. However, I fixed that DVD ISO bug in 20.0 beta1 which is now in testing and unstable.

@Jankster can you please try 20.0 beta or you need me to upload 20.0 to bullseye-backports?

Hi thanks for the reply. I have never been successful at compiling any programs in my life but I would be happy to give it a test drive if it's in a repo somewhere!

I've been playing DVD files (.iso) for many months on Kodi. All of a sudden, whenever I click on any iso, Kodi just quits and returns me to my Android Box's menu.

Any ideas?

As far as i know, this issue is solved with Kodi 21.1.
I also have a lot of DVD-isos. Waiting impatient for the new version.
Let's see how long it takes till its spread with flatpak...

Thanks. So, basically, we're just waiting on an update, right? Any idea when that's due?

I use Kodi for playing iso a lot. But, come to think of it, I probably haven't for about seven or eight weeks, which I *think* predates the last update - does that sound right?

Side note: unlike the superb desktop version, I find that VLC for Android handles iso VERY badly, which is why I don't bother with it. It's also inferior when playing all the more typical media files (very choppy). Have you found that too?
