v20 Thumbnails for Pictures in Portrait scrambled
#1
Hello,
After upgrading from Kodi v19 to v20, the thumbnails for pictures in portrait orientation are scrambled in "Pictures" menu using Shift View.
Image
This is reproducable on Android TV and Windows. Independent of the picture storage (local or remote) or the picture resolution. Landscape thumbnails are fine and also pictures in full screen.

Best greetings!

I have the exact same problem - only portrait orientation photos have this problem.

Care to share one?

Is it possible that portrait mode was using the windows left/right resize o/s functions and saved in some proprietary format?

ImageImageIf I open up the vertical/portrait orientation photos, they appear fine.  I think its the program trying to expand it to full screen/landscape orientation in the preview maybe?

The same thing happens when a vertical orientation photo is displayed on the main screen (background is a slideshow of the picture directory).  Horizontal orientation photos display fine, vertical have the same distortion.  See below.  Switched back to default skin, same issue.  ImageImage

with no information to work with i dont know how this is expected to be fixed

i tried to find similar photos to the one in the screenshot, 4000x3000 from a samsung camera - https://dwaves.de/2022/05/27/more-samsun...ures-fotos

they display properly on debian linux, 19.4 from debian, 20.0 compiled from github and 21 ALPHA compiled from github

they also display properly on a fire tv cube gen3 running kodi 21 ALPHA compiled from github

-----

so if someone wants to post one of their photos to a sharing site and provide a Debug Log so we have information maybe this can be fixed otherwise best of luck

I noticed it some time ago, forgot about it and this thread reminded me. PR created, shouldn't take long to merge for inclusion in 20.2

Hi @Crystal IP:
That would be great, if you could fix it! Smile
Do you still need an example jpg?
For me it didn't matter which source I used for a jpg (all kinds of cameras or mobiles)

There was a problem with the generation of thumbnails for portrait mode pictures (those stored as landscape + rotation attribute)

@bfritzinger the fix is in the last nightly releases.

@all please give it a try and confirm the issue is indeed fixed so that the fix can be included in the future v20.2.

Please note that it does not fix the existing thumbnails (Kodi doesn't touch user data, even cache) so for an existing install delete manually the existing thumbs.
Located in Kodi's user profile ($OS/user dependent prefix to Kodi profile$/userdata/Thumbnails)

To confirm the fix:
1. New installation of Kodi, or delete existing thumbnails (see above) of existing install.
2. In Kodi's Pictures page, browse in a folder that contains portrait mode pictures to generate the new thumbnails.
The new thumbnails are not used for display yet, correct display at this point doesn't mean success.
3. Quit and restart Kodi
4. Navigate to the same portrait mode pictures and browse > the display should be correct (now Kodi is using the fixed thumbnails)

Hi @CrystalP,
that didn't solve the problem unfortunately. I still get scrambled Thumbnails with the Nexus Nightly KodiSetup-20230513-f71f23da-Nexus-x64.exe
I followed your steps and removed the thumbs, started the nightly, created thumbs (which were already scrambled then), did a Kodi restart and got the scrambled images. I also checked, if a deleted the correct thumbs: The folder which I removed was recreated and contained new thumbs.
Here a link to my screenshot, the original jpg and the corrupt thumb:

the sample image DSCF9035.jpg displays normally for me both thumbnail and when opened - Kodi (21.0-ALPHA1 (20.90.101) Git:20230321-124023d6ff). Platform: Linux x86 64-bit

@bfritzinger I should have been clearer, use the Omega (v21) nightlies please. The fix hasn't been backported to v20 (Nexus) yet, we'll be more comfortable with a verification on v21 first.

In case you're not aware, if you want to test a v21 alpha nightly and not mess with you exisiting stable v20 install, then you can do this with portable mode. Simply download the exe from http://mirrors.kodi.tv/nightlies/windows/win64/master/ and install to a different folder, then create a shortcut to the kodi.exe file and add the -p to the shortcut, for more details see https://kodi.wiki/view/Portable_mode#MS_Windows
