Linux Simple howto for remote configuration using lirc?

Exclamation
Is there a simple howto on how to set up lirc to work with kodi?

On my previous Linux Mint install I just did apt-get install lirc and chose the "Windows Media Center Tranceivers/Remotes (all)" remote.

Now (Linux Mint 21.1 with Kodi 20.1.) installing lirc doesn't bring up a setup screen to choose the remote.  I tried using a previous version of lirc from Ubuntu Xenial (apparently the last version with the configuration on installation working), but I don't think that works with systemd.  It hangs my booting up the system for a couple minutes.

Does anyone have a simple setup for lirc?  I am using a mceusb (windows media center compatible) remote.  It's actually a logitech harmony remote, if it matters.

Not too much. 😕  As I mentioned this time around, my workaround from the second post of the previous time I asked the question (God, that's convoluted!), installing the version of lirc from Ubuntu Xenial is no longer a good solution as it hangs booting the system for a couple minutes.

I'd like to get this working properly, not using a version of lirc from Ubuntu 2016.04.

I gave up on lirc due to quirk between x11 and gbm.  Does the device get recognized by the kernel as input source?  If so, recommend you follow an analogous procedure to how I mapped my streamzap remote.  See my sig.
