Impossible to delete movie entry in the movie library...
#1
Hi Kodi users / helpers !

I am running Kodi on a Nvidia Shield, my movies are stored on a usb drive.

Everyfing whas fine until the last update of Kodi, it seems.

Now I am unable to delete video entry in the video library. When I try to delete a movie using the local menu, the entry disappear for 2 seconds and then reappear.

All authorizations in Kodi and in Android are ok (the same as when all was working well).

Please, could you help me the to restore this essential fonctionality ?

Many thanks for your kind attention and help.

Regards.

Marc, ensure that in system that you have advanced or expert mode on; with settings>media>general>Allow file renaming & deletion flag toggled. Deletion of the file will target the movie file and .info only (so if you have images, extras, thumbs, trailers, logo's... placed by 3rd party applications they will stay but should not show up, you will have to deal with these extras manually atm). The cache will still show the image as if the movie still exists, but trying to play it will show it's gone with some error. Utilizing the system settings again in media>library>the function clean library will delete the listing in the library and the issue should be gone gone..

If your media is not available, e.g. the drive/source is unplugged, no real deletion will happen and the library will include the listing on next scan.

Hi PatK,

Many thanks for your answer, this is really kind.

"Allow file renaming & deletion flag toggled" is correctly set up.

I have new informations to give : in the wall of movies when I select a movie and when I use the local menu "delete", then only the movie file is deleted but the entry stay in the library with movie poster, teaser, logos and so on... When I try to read the movie I get an error because of the missing video file.

My first question is : why this empty entry stay in the library ?

This never happend before, when I was asking for deletion, the complete folder of the movie, including teaser, poster, (...) was removed and obviously the entry itself.

In order to delete this entry here is what I am obliged to do :

- clean the library -> when I am back to the movie wall the entry stay here but it appears like un folder icon on a black background (no poster).
- I select the entry and in the local menu I ask "delete" again -> the entry is deleted and disappear from the wall.

After that the issue is not gone, I have to do so for each entry (and movie) I want to relmove Sad.

So my second question is : Will I be obliged to do this boring process to delete each movie I want to remove ?
My third question is : Is it a bug ? If yes, when this will be fixed ?

Many thanks for your kind attention.

Regards

Marc

To receive meaningful assistance you will need to provide a full debug log.

The instructions are here... debug log (wiki)

If you are using the Basic Method, then ensure the following is applied...
1.Enable debugging in Settings>System Settings>Logging,
2.Restart Kodi
3.Replicate the problem.
4.Upload the log to Kodi Paste Site manually or use the Kodi Logfile Uploader. (wiki) With either method post the link to the log back here.

If you are using the Advanced Method ensure you have correctly created and applied the advancedsettings.xml file (wiki)

In both instances, you should see the word DEBUG throughout the log.

Note: Full logs only. No partial or redacted logs
Do NOT post your logs directly into the forum. Use the Kodi Paste Site. Post the link to your pasted log in the forum

Part of the cache and the way Kodi handles your library; listings are done via ram hash# for speed instead of having to call the disk storage each & every-time for meta-data, images etc.

That's what the clean-up is all about. Look for add-ons that delete according to time/usage parms, https://kodi.wiki/view/Advancedsettings....andatetime or just clean-up on start. Updating or removing videos (wiki) For the most part, deletion of files is pretty simple (but not so simple that accidents happen frequently)  if you're doing heavy pruning, then the recourse is to use the operating system, find the folders/files and use the system delete key, launch Kodi and do a system clean... gone.

If something in what I've said is not working for you, then a debug log posted to a public paste-bin and that URL added to this thread would be the best approach.

Hi,

I will try to make a debug log.

First of all,  I would like to say that I respect a lot the work you do to keep kodi running. Many thanks to you all.

I still have few questions about movie managing in Kodi.

I have created 2 folders, one "movies to watch" and one "movie to keep", in order to not have all in the same wall, what is messy.
I have created a favourite of each of these 2 folders. That helps me to directly access to both of them.
When I access to one of these favourite, I get a wall view of his content.
  • When I select an entry and ask "delete" using context menu, it deletes only the movie file but not the entry. Why ? What can we do with an entry with no video file in it ?
  • When I select an entry, the context menu does not include the "Manage" function. As it is the "new" only way to remove an entry, why don't we have this possibilty ?
The "Manage" fonction is only available when I access to an entry using the global "Movies" section at the first level of Kodi, whitch contain all the movies mixed together Sad .

  • Is there somewhere (may be I missed it Wink ) a "Clean library at startup" function ?
  • Removing an complete entry using the wall of one of my favourite folders was possible in ALL the previous versions of Kodi. Why is this no longer possible ?
  • My last question is : would it be possible to add a "Move" function to the context menu in order to allow the user to move an entry from one folder to an other one ?
Many thanks for your kind attention.

Regards.

I think I see why you're having problems removing movies from the library now - it's because of the way you've created your favourites. You've added them as folders so when viewing them you're not in the library, instead you're in video files mode, which is why you only have the option to delete and not manage them.

I would suggest you delete both from your favourites and create smart playlists for each and then add them to your favourites. That way you'll be in library mode and will have the option to manage them.

Hitcher is right on the button with his reply.

Some rudimentary explanations:
(2024-11-06, 11:36)KDMarc Wrote: it deletes only the movie file but not the entry
There maybe more than one movie or more in the folder, some users don't have their movies in folders, then the delete is a delete, unless they have exported to separate files.
(2024-11-06, 11:36)KDMarc Wrote: context menu does not include the "Manage" function
As noted by Hitcher, you have saved the video source in file mode, most of the better functions are in the library.
(2024-11-06, 11:36)KDMarc Wrote: possible to add a "Move" function to the context menu
Use the file manager for these duties or as Hitcher mentioned the real solution 'create smart playlists for each and then add them to your favourites'.

I do suggest you investigate this for smaller collections (you can have named shortlist sub sections and make them favourites), for larger collections, Smart playlists (wiki) using the path rule & Video nodes (wiki) are on the table. https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=257378
