pictures and sound (2-channel AC3)

two issues for 11/19 build:

1. jpeg pictures displayed in 16:9 720x480p exhibit more pronounced aliasing effects compared to that in xbmp.

2. when ac3 pass thru' is enabled, video encoded with 2-channel ac3 only outputs in 2-channel dolby digital; consequently, audio cannot be distributed to other channels using a/v receiver's dolby prologic or "all channels stereo."
this is different from at least one of the previous builds.

this is the way it's supposed to work, the ac3 stream from your avi is directly passed through to the digital output, then your decoder/receiver/amp deals with it. it would be rather complicated to insert data for additional channels into the ac3 stream. if you want output on all 5.1 channels, you need to disable passthru and enable "output to all speakers", however the sound data will then be decoded and reencoded by the xbox, resulting in a loss of quality. if you got 5 channel digital output from a 2 channel ac3 file before, the passthru option was probably not enabled or not working correctly yet.

most dd receivers have some kind of "output to all" or "stereo x2" option to output stereo input material on more than the 2 front speakers, check for different settings or "effects" available on your receiver.

i can't really comment on the picture issue since i haven't used that function much, someone else commented that pictures look better since the max resolution was recently increased to 2048...

i'm no expert on digital audio but i know there's a "signal" the source sends to the receiver, telling it how to handle the incoming digital audio signal. some previous version of xbmc "permits" the receiver to activate dolby prologic or "output to all," the 11-19 build doesn't.

there is noway we can modify ac3 direct passthrough streams, because we do not have encoders, even we have encoders, it is not possible realtime encode by software.

conclusion, do not expect any stream change(tamper) in direct passthrough mode.

unckeck this option if you would like to output to all speakers
