I have asked for a budget for a HTPC, which came out for 404,20€:
- Nox Box Black (with controller) - 72€
- Motherboard Asus P5QL/EPU S775 - 60€
- Intel Core 2 Duo E5300 Box - 55€
- Powercolour HD4350 1GB DDR2 HDMI - 33,25€
- Team Group Elite DDR2 PC6400 2x2GB CAS5 - 45€
- Seagate Disk 500GB - 40€
- Samsung DVD-RW - 16,58€
- Energy 2Hix DNA 500W - 15€
what do you think about it?

I'm thinking on Windows Xp most likely (i think it might be faster than Vista) and later 7.
I won't push any signal from TV, so it's all about streaming Video/MP3 files (mkv, avi, etc.) from hard-drive and accessing the internet.
yup that's about it...

Can't comment on windows platform as I don't use it, i only use it on linux and mac.
From what l know of windows, it should play 720p content but may struggle with 1080p.
If you are using it for htpc only, why not go for a ion based machine? Much cheaper, can run linux and will give you full 1080p playback?
